The fool thrives on chaos and unpredictability, embracing misfortune as a vital component of his success. By amplifying his inherent risks and rewards to extremes, the fool turns even the most dire odds into opportunities, reveling in the precarious balance between triumph and disaster.

The fool is an archetype of the gambler class.

Archetype Main Ability Scores:
The fool mainly focuses on DEX and STR for combat and CHA for their class features.

Archetype Feature Replacements:

Fool Hardy (Ex)

At 1st level, a fool gains a number of temporary hit points per day equal to his gambler level plus his Charisma modifier.

This ability replaces keep ’em guessing.

Phantom Roll (Su)

At 1st level, a fool gains the Phantom Roll class feature but cannot grant a base bonus with this ability. Instead, the likelihood of rolling a lucky or unlucky bonus is altered: a result of 4, 5, 6, 10, or 11 provides a lucky bonus, while a result of 1, 2, 3, 7, or 9 provides an unlucky bonus.

Table: Fool's Phantom Roll

LevelLucky Bonus
(4-6, 10, or 11)
Unlucky Bonus
(1-3, 7-9)
1st+5+1
5th+6+2
9th+7+2
13th+9+3
17th+10+3

This ability modifies phantom roll.

Slots (Su)

At 3rd level, a fool gains the Slots class feature but cannot treat rolled 7s as wildcards. Instead, when he scores a “Win” by rolling doubles, he may select any single effect from the chosen reel to bestow. Upon scoring a “Jackpot!” by rolling triples, he may select any two effects from the chosen reel to bestow.

This ability modifies slots.

Press Your Luck (Su)

At 5th level, a fool gains the Press Your Luck class feature with a unique drawback.

He gains a +1 bonus to the DC of saving throws he imposes, increasing by an additional +1 at 12th and 19th levels (to a maximum of +3). However, if the target succeeds on their saving throw, the fool suffers the effect for its full duration instead of it ending at the end of his next turn.

This ability modifies press your luck.

Coin Toss (Ex or Su)

At 5th level, a fool gains the Coin Toss class feature with a chaotic flourish befitting his unpredictable nature.

When using Coin Toss, the fool may impose a penalty to his attack roll, up to a maximum equal to his Charisma modifier, to amplify the damage dealt. For every –2 penalty he imposes on himself, he adds one additional weapon die of damage to the attack (1d4 for gro, or 1d6 for gil and MGP). However, if the attack misses, the fool suffers the additional damage that would be imposed instead.

This ability modifies coin toss.

Never Lucky (Su)

At 7th level, the fool learns to channel his pervasive misfortune, spreading it to all within his presence.

As a swift action, the fool can emit a 20-foot aura of unluck, imposing a –2 penalty to all attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks for both himself and his enemies (no save). This penalty increases by an additional –1 for every four gambler levels beyond 7th, up to a maximum of –5 at 19th level. The fool can deactivate this aura as a swift action.

This ability replaces lucky sevens.

Take it on the Chin (Ex)

At 12th level, the fool becomes so accustomed to misfortune that he can redirect its impact into something more bearable.

As a free action which can be taken out of turn, the fool may choose to suffer damage equal to his gambler level instead of enduring the effect with an imposed non-permanent duration of a failed saving throw. This damage cannot be reduced or mitigated in any way and is taken immediately after the saving throw is failed.

This ability replaces ace in the hole.

Twist of Fate (Su)

At 14th level, a fool gains the Twist of Fate class feature, reflecting his erratic manipulation of chance and destiny.

When using Twist of Fate, the fool increases the DC of the saving throw he forces by +2. However, if the resulting roll matches the original saving throw type that would have been imposed, the fool instead suffers a –2 penalty to the DC.

This ability modifies twist of fate.
